What Is The M.I.N.D. Institute (MI)?
The Music Intelligence Neural Development Institute is a
community based, non-profit, interdisciplinary basic
scientific research institute which was formed in 1997, by
the team of scientists that did the dramatic and ground
breaking research (see below) that used music as a window
into higher brain function. At the core of this resarch is the
structured trion model of higher brain function that makes
clear predictions about the relationship of music and the
neural machinery of mammalian cortex. Results from behavioral
studies confirming these predictions have received world-wide
media and public attention.
The goal of the MI is not only to understand the neural
machinery of higher brain function and perform innovative
behavioral studies, but to channel the results back into
society to the benefit of education and medicine.
Institute Scientists
Mark Bodner (University of California, Los Angeles)
Xiaodan Leng (Pasadena City College)
Matthew Peterson (University of California, Berkeley)
Frances Rauscher (University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh)
Gordon Shaw (Univeristy of California, Irvine)
The site contains references to the well publicized research of
Dr. Gordon Shaw and colleagues on the "Mozart Effect" and
enancement of spatial-temporal reasoning as a result of keyboard
music lessons.
