Colleagues,
I'm working on a chapter of the the second edition of the Handbook on
the Teaching & Learning of Music entitled "Changing Concepts of
Teacher Education" with Ken Zeichner, professor in the College of
Education at UW-Madison.
It would help me greatly if you could identify current MUSIC teacher
education program models that are based on one or any combination of
the following:
*The National Music Standards
*Five-year "Add-on" Certification Concept (programs in which
students complete usually one, but sometimes two, years of
professional education coursework and supervised field experiences in
addition to an undergraduate degree in music)
*"Fast-track" Post-baccalaureate Concept (programs based on a
framework other than simply completion of required courses not taken
at the undergraduate level)
*Summer-Only Post-baccalaureate Concept
*Specific Populations Concept (programs aimed at Specific
Populations (such as paragrofessionals or "career changers")
*Developmentalist Tradition (programs that are built around a
framework of knowledge of students' cognitive and physical
development)
*Social Efficiency Tradition (program based on mastery of
teaching skills and standards based on educational research)
*Social Reconstructionist Tradition (program designed to
prepare teachers who consciously address the social and political
implications of their teaching and work to build a more just, humane
society)
*Reflective Teacher Concept
*Master Teacher Concept (program designed around developing
skills in young teachers which master teachers possess)
*Partnership Models (programs based on partnerships
arrangements between colleges and K-12 schools, departments of
education, etc.)
*Alternative Certification (programs run by school districts,
state departments of education, private providers)
*Professional Development School Concept (Holmes Group)
*Programs Utilizing On-line or Correspondence Courses
Please e-mail me the names of institutions which are utilizing these
frameworks for music teacher education and a short description or
location of references describing the programs.
Thanks in advance for your help with this matter.
Sincerely,
Glenn Nierman
