U of Iowa Obermann Fellowships - Research seminar: The Emergence of Modern Disciplines - Summer 2002 . . . [MTG] (02.02.02)

SCOPE: The University of Iowa Obermann Center for Advanced Studies is
inviting applications for the Obermann Fellowships for the summer 2002
research seminar, The Emergence of Modern Disciplines. The seminar
will take place from June 10 to 26, 2002.

DEADLINE: February 1.

FUNDS: Up to 10 fellowships of $2,500 plus $500 for traveling and
housing expenses.

ELIGIBILITY: Applicants must hold a Ph.D. or comparable degree.
Applicants should be ready to produce original, previously unpublished
work for publication in a volume and to participate in sessions
devoted to readings, individual papers, invited lectures, and special
events. Participants will be chosen in part to provide sufficient
range for a published collection of essays. Some fellowships are
reserved for University of Iowa scholars.

AREAS: The seminar invites applications from scholars in as wide an
array of fields as possible, including but not limited to science
studies, rhetorical studies, classics, history of philosophy,
political theory, economic history, history of the book, literary
history, religious studies, women's studies, and media studies.

The seminar will examine the conditions under which the modernist
separation of the natural sciences, the social sciences, and the arts
and humanities arose. In this interdisciplinary seminar, scholars of
all three areas are invited to assess formative moments in and
shifting boundaries between academic fields by examining key figures
and movements from the 16th to the 20th centuries. The seminar will
question how robust this trichotomy is in the face of postmodern
challenges.
