Call for Papers

The Commission on Music in Cultural, Educational and Mass Media Policies of
ISME - in advance of the 2002 ISME World Conference (Bergen / Norway) will
convene a Seminar on the subject of "Media and Music Education between Cultures"

Place: Sibelius Academy of Music Helsinki (Finland)
Date: August 5.- 8. 2002 (preceding the ISME World Conference)

Suggested topics:

Media and music cultures of the world:
Do the media give us the best possible opportunity to learn about other
music cultures? Or are the versions of different music cultures selective,
incomplete, inaccurate and do they often present a distorted picture? Is the
way of presenting them contradictory to the values of the cultures
portrayed? Do we obtain a true understanding of the richness of the planet`s
culture or a false impression?

Musical heritage and technological change:
Is cultural identity possible today? How relevant is musical heritage to
future generations? Is preservation possible in a changing world? What`s
about globalization and the survival of musical traditions, world-music,
crossover-music, folk-music etc.? What happens when two cultures meet and
interact: is the gain more important than the potential loss? What are the
advantages and disadvantages of cultural interchange?

Music education and teacher training:
Music education and teacher training at the digital era / How in future
music teachers can take advantage of the media and educate media literate
people / How can music education help to promote the presence of the various
musical traditions and musics of the world in media? How can we include
musics of the world in our schools and how can music education help to
understand various musical traditions? (programmes, curricula, problems,
research, publications) / Ethnomusicology in teacher training /
Multicultural learning in schools, colleges and universities.
