ISME EARLY CHILDHOOD COMMISSION
2002 CONFERENCE: CHILDREN'S MUSICAL CONNECTIONS
5-9 AUGUST 2002, DANISH UNIVERSITY OF EDUCATION, COPENHAGEN, DENMARK
The aim of this conference is to share and disseminate the newest ideas
regarding research and pedagogical practices in early childhood music
education. The Commission invites the submission of papers on empirical
research, philosophical and theoretical issues, models of practice, and
workshop proposals related to the following topics:
- - Investigating Children's Musical Connections. Featuring research studies
on musical characteristics, musical responses, and musical development of
the young child;
- - Facilitating Children's Musical Connections. Featuring research or models
of practice addressing the educative role of adults and environments, the
training of early childhood music educators, innovative teaching resources,
and workshops demonstrating exemplary pedagogical strategies;
- - Reflecting upon Children's Musical Connections. Featuring conceptual,
methodological, philosophical, and historical perspectives linking theory to
practice.
Papers will be selected by the Commission based on quality, relevance to the
Conference topics and Commission goals, and geographical representation.
Finances permitting, one author of each accepted paper will be the guest of
the Commission (room and board provided). Places will also be made available
for people who wish to attend the Conference and are not making

Papers may also be submitted for presentation in a Commission Session at the
ISME 2002 World Conference in Bergen, Norway, 11-16 August. Please indicate
according to item 3 below. It is also possible to submit papers representing
multiple views on a common issue or topic, as a group with an appointed
chair responsible for the session.
Guidelines for submitting papers:
1. Papers are not to exceed 2000 words in length and abstracts are not to
exceed 200 words.
2. Papers and abstracts must be typed in Times New Roman font size 12, and
single-spaced, preferably following the suggested format at the Early
Childhood Commission website <www.isme.org>.
3. The top of the first page shall include the name, position and complete
address, including telephone and fax no. and Email address of the person(s)
submitting the paper plus the following statements indicating choice of
presentation:
This paper is submitted for consideration for "the ISME Early Childhood
Conference `Children's Musical Connections', Copenhagen, Denmark, 5-9 August
2002" OR "the ISME Early Childhood Commission Session at the 2002 World
Conference in Bergen, Norway, 11-16 August 2002" OR both.
4. The Presenter's last name must appear at the top right corner of each
page in the paper.
5. The full text and abstract in English must be submitted in MS Word or RTF
format sent via Email to: lily@libarts.up.ac.za ,with copies to

ilzajoly@linkway.com.br ; and manins@voyager.co.nz
6. If a video is to be used, a description and the timing of the video must
be included with the submission. The Chair may request a copy of the video
recording in VHS format to be submitted if deemed necessary.
7. This paper must not have been submitted or published elsewhere.
8. It is a condition for acceptance of a paper that the author will present
the paper in person and he/ she will attend the entire Conference.
9. It is also a condition of acceptance that the copyright is vested in the
International Society for Music Education.
10. Everyone attending ISME Conference must be members of ISME (membership
information is available upon request).
11. Presentation of the paper will be in English unless the Presenter makes
prior arrangements well in advance (six months) with the Commission to
present it in another language with the assistance of an interpreter.
12. Papers must be received no later than 15 September 2001.
*Non-adherence to these guidelines will result in the paper not being
considered by the Commission.
