SCOPE: The Thomas J. Watson Research Center at International Business
Machines Corporation (IBM) is inviting applications for the Herman
Goldstine Postdoctoral Fellowship in Mathematical and Computer
Sciences.

DEADLINE: January 9.

FUNDS: The fellowship has a period of one year, and may be extended by
another year on mutual agreement. The stipend will range from $85,000
to $95,000, depending on the experience of the fellowship recipient,
with an allowance for moving expenses. One fellowship will be awarded.

ELIGIBILITY: Each candidate must have a doctorate and not more than
five years of postdoctoral professional experience when the fellowship
commences.

AREAS: This fellowship provides scientists of outstanding ability an
opportunity to advance their scholarship as resident department
members at the Research Center. The department provides an atmosphere
in which basic research is combined with experience on technical
problems arising in industry. Close interaction with permanent
department members is expected, but fellows will be free to pursue
their own research interests.

The Research Center is located in Westchester County, approximately 40
miles north of New York City. The program of the Mathematical Sciences
Department is organized for research in pure and applied mathematics
and in theoretical and exploratory computer science. Ongoing research
in the department includes work on biometry, coding theory,
computational complexity, computational linguistics, computer music,
computer vision, continuous complexity, cryptography, data and text
mining, differential equations, dynamical systems, financial
mathematics, high-performance computation, knowledge discovery
systems, machine learning, machine translation, mathematical
optimization, numerical analysis, scheduling algorithms, sequential
and parallel algorithms, statistics, stochastic optimization, user
interface technology, visualization, and yield management.
