Date: Mon, 22 Oct 2001 19:16:30 -0700
SCOPE: The American Academy in Rome is inviting applications for seven
fellowships: the Oscar Broneer Fellowship in Classical Studies and six
Rome Prize Fellowships. The American Academy in Rome is an American
overseas center for independent study and advanced research in the
fine arts and the humanities.
DEADLINE: January 15 for the Broneer Fellowship, November 15 for the
others.
FUNDS: An Oscar Broneer Fellow receives room and board and a cash
stipend of $11,600. Fellows in residence in Athens receive a cash
stipend of $8,840 plus room, board and a waiver of fees.
Each Rome Prize winner is provided a stipend, meals, a bedroom with
private bath, and a study or studio. Those with children under 18 live
in subsidized apartments nearby.
ELIGIBILITY: See below.
AREAS: The Oscar Broneer Fellowship allows a young scholar of
classical antiquity, or of the reception of Graeco-Roman culture in
the Middle Ages or the Renaissance, to broaden his or her
understanding of the subject. Applicants must be PhD candidates or
recent PhDs (six-year limit) who have not received tenure (not to rank
above assistant professor) and who have been Fellows of the American
Academy in Rome within the past seven years or Regular Students or
Student Associates at the American School of Classical Studies within
the past five years.
Rome Prize Fellowships
The Academy Post-Doctoral Fellowships are for 11 months and allow
scholars to conduct research at the Academy in Rome in the following
areas: architecture, design, historic preservation and conservation,
landscape architecture, literature, musical composition, visual arts,
ancient studies, medieval studies, renaissance and early modern
studies, and modern Italian studies. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. at
the time of application. Applicants for Academy post-doctoral awards
must be assistant professors, associate professors appointed within
the prior two years, or independent scholars who have received the
Ph.D. within the prior seven years. Past recipients of pre-doctoral
Rome Prize fellowships may not apply for post-doctoral Rome Prize
fellowships.
Eleven-Month Fellowships: Applicants in architecture or landscape
architecture must hold an accredited degree in the field of
application. Applicants in historic preservation and conservation are
expected to be seasoned professionals, actively engaged in their
fields, with enough experience and maturity to give them direction
once they arrive in Rome. Applicants in musical composition must hold
a bachelor's degree in music, musical composition, or its equivalent.
Applicants in visual arts must demonstrate at least three years of
professional commitment and be currently engaged in studio work.
NEH Post-Doctoral Fellowships: Applicants must hold a Ph.D. at the
time of application. U.S. citizens or individuals who have resided at
least three years in the U.S. are eligible. Past recipients of
pre-doctoral Rome Prize fellowships may not apply for post-doctoral
Rome Prize fellowships.
Pre-doctoral Fellowships (11 months): Applicants must have fulfilled
all pre-dissertation requirements by the application deadline.
Applicants should consider whether their projects are at a stage and
of such a nature that they would derive greater benefit from an
11-month or a two-year fellowship; selecting either option will have
no bearing on the jury's evaluation of the proposal's merits.
Applicants may choose to check both options.
Pre-doctoral Fellowships (two years): Two-year awards are limited to
projects in the history of art and architecture of any period and to
projects whose disciplinary focus is in ancient studies. See note on
11-month fellowships.
Six-Month Fellowships in the School of Fine Arts allow individuals to
work at the Academy in Rome in one of the following areas:
architecture, design arts (including graphic design, industrial
design, interior design, set design, urban design and urban planning),
historic preservation and conservation, and landscape architecture.
Applicants for six-month fellowships must have a bachelor's degree or
equivalent in the field of application and at least seven years of
professional experience and currently be practicing in the field.
