Musics of the World's Cultures: A Source Book for Music Educators
The International Society for Music Education is pleased to present this
Source Book on musics of the world's cultures. The ISME Board and its
Advisory Panel, under the leadership of Bruno Nettl, envisaged this
publication to be directed to the widest possible spectrum of people
involved in music education.
In 1953 the International Society for Music Education, in association with
UNESCO and the International Music Council (IMC), organized its First
World Conference on Music Education in Brussels, Belgium. Since this
landmark conference the International Society for Music Education has held
as its main mission the worthy goal of nurturing, advocating and promoting
music education in all parts of the world. A consistent mission of each of
the ISME's 23 World Conferences since 1953 has been to foster mutual
understanding among peoples throughout the world of music, and to help
support and preserve the great musical traditions of all cultures. ISME's
World Conferences represent therefore, a powerful symbol of the work and
strongly held beliefs of thousands of music educators dealing with all
aspects of music teaching and learning across all regions of the world.
Music educators internationally have found many different ways of
stimulating music education as an integral part of general education. Very
often these ways are based on differing views concerning the purpose of
music in education, and involve different techniques and methods for
teaching music in schools and the wider community. This diversity of views
is one of the strengths of music education worldwide for although we all
share the common goal of providing the very highest standard of exposure
to music for all learners we teach, many of us have found very different
ways of achieving this purpose. Diversity of views has strengthened and
enriched the work of ISME worldwide.
As part of ISME's ongoing efforts to produce resources which cross
national boundaries and which can be used by music educators
internationally, we have been able to produce this Source Book on musics
of the world's cultures.
Who will use the Source Book?
those who set the agendas for music education (locally, nationally
and internationally)
school and music department leaders
leaders of music education organizations
music administrators
curriculum writers
authors of textbooks
music educators who teach in school systems
music educators who teach in community music settings
other policy makers
The objectives of the Source Book are:
to initiate rethinking of music education policies and curricula,
nationally and locally;
to provide a rationale for developing music curricula in culturally
pluralistic societies, and to adjust existing music curricula in
culturally homogeneous societies;
to encourage music educators, organizations, and institutions to develop
materials suitable for teaching musics of their culture in other
societies; and
to inspire societies to use musical materials from other cultures in their
own.
