The California Digital Library (CDL) officially opened its public
"digital doors" Wednesday, January 20, 1999. Access to the new CDL
website is available through the UCI Libraries website at
<http://www.lib.uci.edu/>http://www.lib.uci.edu (click on the banner
announcement at the top of the page) and at
<http://www.cdlib.org/>http://www.cdlib.org.

The new CDL website complements the collections of the UCI Libraries
and the other eight UC campus libraries by focusing on building and
providing access to the shared digital collections of the University.
Through its "Directory of Collections and Services" the new CDL web
gateway provides access to more than two thousand electronic journals,
"finding aids" for special and archival collections throughout the
State, journal abstracting and indexing databases, and the CDL's
Melvyl(R) Catalog of UC-owned print and non-print material.

UCI Libraries are also participating in a new collaborative service
for UC faculty, graduate students, and staff called "Request," which
is debuting along with the CDL website. The "Request" service lets UCI
users easily place online interlibrary loan requests for materials
owned by another UC campus with a simple click of a web "Request"
button. Currently "Request" is limited to requests for books and
other circulating monographs in the Melvyl Catalog. In later phases of
the "Request" project, UCI users will be able to request journal
articles from other UC campuses as well.

For more information on the new CDL website and services, please
contact your department's bibliographer or call the appropriate
reference desk at the Main Library (949-824-4976), Science Library
(949-824-3705), or Medical Center Library (714-456-5583).
