Subject: Arts and Humanities Fellowships
Information as of September 17, 2001
**********************************************************************
SCOPE: The Howard Foundation awards a limited number of fellowships
each year for independent projects in fields selected on a rotational
basis. Ten fellowships will be offered for the 2002-2003 fellowship
year to support persons engaged in independent projects in the
following fields: music (composition); musicology; playwriting
(excluding film); and theatre arts (including theory and criticism,
excluding production and direction).
DEADLINE: Nominations are due October 17. Applications are due
November 29.
FUNDS: Stipends for one year are normally $20,000 for each of the 10
fellowships.
ELIGIBILITY: The Foundation intends primarily to support people in the
middle stages of their careers whose work to date is evidence of their
promise and achievement. The designation "mid-career" refers to those
who are no longer beginners in their field and those who have not yet
realized their full potential. Nominees should normally have the rank
of assistant or associate professor or their nonacademic equivalents.
Support is intended to augment paid sabbatical leaves, making it
financially possible for grantees to have a year in which to pursue
their projects free of any other professional responsibilities.
Accepted nominees should normally be eligible for sabbaticals or other
leave with guaranteed additional support. Candidates, regardless of
their country of citizenship, must be professionally based in the U.S.
either by affiliation with an institution or by residence.
AREAS: Future awards are anticipated in the following fields:
2003-2004: history, history of science, and political science;
2004-2005: creative writing in English, including novels, short
stories, poetry, essays, and creative nonfiction; 2005-2006: literary
criticism, film criticism, and translation; and 2006-2007: painting,
sculpture, and art history.
