A NEW BOOK: CHILDREN COMPOSING

The book consists of six chapters by researchers from Sweden and Australia
with the aim to expand literature dealing with creativity in childhood and
point to some issues needed to be addressed in future research. The book
took shape during a symposium with the name 'Children Composing' at the
Malmo Academy of Music, in May 1996. The participants all felt that it
would be worthwhile to develop their ideas and findings further and to
collect them into a book. They also wanted to allow the music mentioned to
be heard in that book. As a result, a CD with musical examples has been
produced and added to accompany the written text. Co-editors of the book
are Bertil Sundin and Goran Folkestad, Malmo Academy of Music, Lund
University, Sweden, and Gary E. McPherson, University of South Wales,
Sydney, Australia.

Contents:

After an introduction by Bertil Sundin, Margaret Barrett, the University of
Tasmania, Australia, presents a critical overview of 'Researching
Children's Compositional Processes and Products: Connections to Music
Education Practise' (Chapter 1). In Chapter 3 she describes a recent
project of ther own with children aged 5 to 8: 'Children Composing: A View
of Aesthetic Decision-Making'.

In Chapter 2 Bertil Sundin summarises a research project he completed in
the 1960s, 'Musical Creativity in the First Six Years: A Research Project
in Retrospect.' and comments on the present situation in creativity
research.

In Chapter 4 Sture Brandstrom and Fredrik Hogberg, the School of Music in
Pitea, Lulea University of Technology, Sweden, describe a current teaching
project, 'Composing and Teaching Composition: The Lulea Concept', while
Goran Folkestad in Chapter 5 elaborates some parts of his doctoral
dissertation thesis. The title of his contribution here is 'Musical
Learning as Cultural Practise as Exemplified in Computer-Based Creative
Music-Making'.

In the last chapter Gary E. McPherson discusses the preceeding text with
'Creativity and Music Education: Broader Issues - Wider Perspectives'.

An attached CD with examples from Chapters 2-5 completes the book.
